“In my current journey running for office the top three questions that I get asked are Do you have children? Are you married? How old are you? I’m not young, I just look young because I am Asian, and we age well. When I see young men running for office, I don’t see them getting these questions. As if my fertility has anything to do with my ability to hold an office. So, if I don’t have a child, I can’t have opinions or policy suggestions about education? How many men are in education or office that don’t have children? I was getting so many sexually lewd and racist comments and messages on my Instagram account, that I had to change it so now only followers who are supporting my campaign can comment on the account. People are questioning whether the recent mass shooting in Georgia was racially or sexually motivated. Well, it was both because Asian women are hypersexualized and fetishized. And this issue has an imperialistic history that is tied to the Page Act which limited the immigration of Chinese women into the United States based on the hyper-sexualization of these women. These tropes live on in our society and really hurt Asian women.” – Julia Won is a running for New York City Council in district 26.
